Rancilio Silvia - PID Retrofit Kit

by: Home Coffee Machines Ltd

  • Auber Instruments PID Retrofit (includes steam temperature control and an extraction timer that can be programmed with the pre-infusion function)
  • This PID does it all!
  • This PID controller kit is designed for retrofitting the Rancilio Silvia espresso machine.  By adding a PID controller to the heater control circuit, the brewing water temperature can be controlled to ±1 °C accuracy. Thus, it will significantly improve the taste of your espresso. Users can also easily adjust the brew water temperature to suit their own tastes.
This kit fits all Silvia models up to the current Silvia V5 which has yet to be verified as compatible. The Silvia V5 was released in late 2015 for the European market. Please send us an email or give us a call if you have any questions on 091 395776 or info@homecoffeemachines.ie
    • The kit includes:

      • Custom manufactured PID temperature controller with parameters set for the machine.
      • Controller box with stainless steel panel that matches the brush finish of the machine.
      • Solid state relay with mounting hardware and heat conductive paste.
      •  Platinum RTD temperature sensor.
      •  High temperature resistant wires, color coded, cut to length and terminated with proper connectors

        •  To install the kit, users will need the following:

          • Basic knowledge of electronics wiring and safety.
          • Screw driver, pliers, a socket wrench and small amount of alcohol.
          • Estimated installation time is around 60-90 minutes.

            • No requirement for special tools. No requirement to learn how to set up the PID controller (usually, this is the most challenging part of the project for espresso drinkers with no control engineering background).
            • Unique features:

              • The PID controller in this kit is specifically modified for home espresso brewing applications. Two additional parameters are included to balance the requirements of cold start speed, shot recovery speed and long term stability. This is a different controller than our universal controller SYL-1512. Fig 1 is the temperature response curve.
              • The platinum RTD temperature sensor is more accurate and has greater long-term stability than most thermocouple sensors.  Temperature variations within the controller’s environment will not alter the accuracy of its reading.
              • All the cables in the kit have higher temperature endurances than the original cables used by the manufacture. We use color coded cables with either fluoropolymer or silicone insulation. This will prevent the potential electrical shock resulting from PVC insulated wires touching the boiler during operation.
              • This controller is one of the most compact on the market.  With a custom made enclosure, the controller can be mounted between the group head and steam wand without interfering with their function. This mounting makes "it almost looks like it came with the Silvia!"...... as one of our customer wrote to us.

                • Compared to buying the controller and components separately, this kit is a great value. It not only offers better performance but also saves you time and money. The kit includes 20 different types of parts that would cost substantially more if purchased separately (26 pieces total). In order to save customer’s time on assembling and reduce the chance of making mistake, we also pre-assembled these parts and set all parameters for the controller. The only work needed either has to be done during installation or is difficult to ship pre-assembled. This reduces the project time from days (or even weeks considering ordering these parts separately) to less than an hour.

                  90 days warranty is offered.
                • The kit works for both 115 VAC and 240VAC. The PID parameter setting is for Celsius.
                  • The pre-infusion is achieved by pumping a small amount of water into the coffee, holding off the pump for a second to let the water soak in, then starting the 25 seconds of pumping. This will prevent abrupt high pressure water on the dry coffee powder that can cause some fast flow channels to ruin the brewing. It will improve the consistency of the brewing even if the coffee wasn’t perfectly tamped. The extraction timer contains three segments: pre-infusion pulse (Tp), soak (Td), and brew (Tb). Each segment can be set by the user with a0.1 second resolution.  When the ">" key is pressed, the controller starts the brewing sequence automatically.  The pump can be stopped at any time by pressing the ">" key a second time. This feature allows you to operate the brew pump manually, with the timer as a reference. Users can also bypass the timer to use the switch on the machine for manual control of the brewing process.

The steam temperature control allows the boiler temperature to be held at tighter range during frothing. For the user, operating this controller is the same as operating the regular machine; no extra button is needed to press for frothing.  When the steam switch is turned on, the on/off temperature of the heater is controlled with 1 degree (F or C) difference compared to the original thermostat's >10C (or 20F) difference. With this level of temperature control, you will no longer need to surf the temperature for frothing, because the heater will kick on much sooner than the original thermostat.  The on/off temperature can also be adjusted by the user.
                  • The installation is completely reversible if you ever want to sell the machine or send it for servicing.

This kit fits all Silvia models up to the current Silvia E which has yet to be verified as compatible. The Silvia V5was released in late 2015 for the European market. Please send us an email or give us a call if you have any questions on 091 395776 or info@homecoffeemachines.ie
